Nitrite (NO₂⁻) is an intermediate compound in the nitrogen cycle, commonly formed during the oxidation of ammonia or the reduction of nitrate. It may be present in treated wastewater or natural waters during biological decomposition. Even at low concentrations, nitrite can be harmful, particularly to infants, causing conditions like methemoglobinemia. On the other hand, high concentrations are often used for corrosion control in industrial systems. Nitrites can also react to form nitrosamines—potentially carcinogenic compounds.

Chemical Reaction Principle:

When nitrites react with a chronotropic acid reagent, a pink color is formed. The intensity of the color corresponds directly to the concentration of nitrite in the water sample.
